What Style of KunTao Silat do you Teach?

Essentially we teach Malabar and American KunTao Silat.  Founder Steve Gartin first studied with Willem DeThouars and was named his First House Disciple and Lineage Heir. He also trained extensively with Pak Bill Chang (U. Un Surya), an Indonesian of Chinese descent and a famous internal Maenpo practitioner.

Therefore, we teach KunTao Silat flavored by the above influences. We offer two programs:

Malabar KunTao Silat, which represents the traditional, hard core KunTao Silat training that made the system so famous for its fighting and self defense prowess.

American KunTao Silat is designed to accommodate older students and students with injuries by supplying a deeper insight into the softer side of the art. Both are really two sides of the same coin in that both systems provide no-nonsense combat skills from different perspectives.

I notice that there are a lot of variations of the forms. Why is that?

KunTao Silat forms:

KunTao Silat is an old school, authentic tradition. This means that it is a living tradition. There are certain principles and laws that make the system what it is, but there are acceptable levels of variety in how those are applied, which is also true when it comes to KunTao Silat forms.

These can be influenced by the particular teacher, his preferences or strengths and the particular attitude the practice is being infused with. Then there is the fact that teaching traditionally was by prescription – to suit the needs of individual students and their capabilities. To the untrained eye, this can create a wide range of variability and be somewhat confusing.

Therefore, in developing the Guru Certification Course, I looked carefully at what each set of exercises or forms was supposed to develop and which expression of the those forms and movements efficiently produced that development. These are the forms that have gone into the GCC and provide the foundation from which you can gain skill and understanding in this art.

How do I certify in the program?

Do the work! There is no quick answer. Train using the materials provided. Engage in forum discussions to get input and direction.

Testing occurs at each level and can be handled online or in person. In person testing is recommended at the higher levels.

There are no guarantees of certification, you must earn it. However, over the twenty years that Steve Gartin has been on the forefront of digital learning programs, there have been many practitioners who developed valuable, life saving skills.

In order to certify as a teacher of KunTao Silat, one must possess and exhibit the core combat skills and the forms from whence one learns those skills.
