      watched the heavy bag video, excellent! Most people merely stand in one place, punching and kicking without moving. Real fighting is fluid as well as dynamic. Learning to duck, dodge and weave while striking is an accomplished skill. It requires a great deal of forethought, as well as lots of practice. This is application at its best.

      KunTao Silat Heavy Bag Training from KunTao Silat.

      Dan Inosanto took part in an article years ago where they used a large wooden box frame with different striking pads and dummies in the corners. The frame was on caster wheels, so it moved about when you hit it. Dan commented that it was an intensive workout.

      The late Arng Ying Lee, in his book on Tai Chi, illustrated the use of two sensitivity drills. 1) a supported stick for sensitivity; 2) a large weighted ball again for weight sensitivity.

      The stick was parallel to the ground about chest high, with 4 bunji cords at both corners. The idea was to use the stick to help develop sensitivity in the arms-without an opponent.

      The Ball was huge, some 4+ feet in diameter, weighted and supported by a block and tackle. The idea was to push on the ball, similar to the weighted bag video, then manipulate or redirect the weighted ball as you moved with it.

      David Chow in his book on kung-fu, had numerous illustrations demonstrating different training methods. One used a number of training bags suspended within a box frame. You started with one bag, progressing to 2, 3, 4, etc. You stood in the middle, striking one bag, causing it to move-swing, learning to avoid or deflect it on its return swing while hitting other bags. Sometimes training partners would stand on the outside and push the bags at you.

      Lastly, I used something I called “Wolf Pack” training when I owned a commercial school. Using a timer, someone would attack you while carrying a kick shield and a blocker (sort of like king Arthur). You would dodge or evade the attack while striking the kick shield. In time we added more opponents, (more kick shields, focus mitts) who often worked together trying to corner you, the same way a wolf pack attacks its prey…All this was done within a set time limit. Also, you couldn’t focus on just one opponent. If you spent too much time fighting one guy, the others would blindside you, attacking from behind. {posted by a member}
