Welcome to the KunTao Silat Family Fabrice!
It’s interesting that Randall was one of the five people who decided what would be in the original curriculum for the Kun Lun Pai, which is what I eventually called Malabar because that was the name given to my personal system from Willem. I had the good fortune of living and training with Randall for…[Read more]

I’ve gone back and forth about this issue for years. Serak is a great martial art, and for some people it is ideal.
Malabar KTS is based upon the teachings of Willem de Thouars, so it would seem most appropriate to include Serak somewhere in Malabar. Paul & Victor de Thouars claim that Serak is completely Indonesian with no influence from…[Read more]

Yes Sir.
And I thank you and Joe for all the guidance.
Sounds like AKS would be the better choice for me.
I think if I upturn a pickle bucket I should have no problems with the low horse stance.
😉
I’ll get to…[Read more] -

Joe,
Thank you again for your time and consideration.
I have no doubt you’re a lot more knowledgeable and have a lot more first-hand experience with this than I do.I also understand there is no way to ‘unload’ a question like how much is adequate training for the average man.
Too many variables…[Read more] -

Yes, John they are the same material used in a slightly different way.
For instance both Djurus Satu and Lankas Dua are performed in a slightly different way in American than in Malabar. From there the systems’ branches grow farther apart.
The American life style is considerably different than the life style in Indonesia was before the Second…[Read more]

Howdy John,
KunTao Silat honours the ancient tradition of training with the ‘master’ in the backyard. In our case it is by video, but the principle remains the same. The major concept is that you learn by doing, not by being told the specifics. It is the principles that provide the keys. By training with the videos, you see what the teacher is…[Read more]

Steve,
Yes, it is the Monkey Foot drills taught by Pak Steve, with some additions drawn from the material itself. The numbering is just a convention developed in my club to keep things straight in our heads/make it easier to teach. I’ll be shooting video of it after the first of the year for the member site – as Pak Steve thinks it would be…[Read more] -

In a conversation with Pak Steve he mentioned that one of the most common questions heard is ‘where do I start?’.
That answer is ver simple. Start with the handwork and legwork.
The turning Djurus is replete with basic application and helps the beginner to have a starting point that will logically evolve into everything else.
Meanwhile, the…[Read more]

For students earning from the distance program, I often suggest that they start with the Kilap Betawi/Serak material Chas shows. This is easier to understand and practice. While doing this, work the legwork and handwork sets until your eyes bleed. You will learn good, fast self defense, while ‘Gartinizing’ your body to be able to understand the…[Read more]

In my clubs the art is broken down into phases –
Phase 1 features the complete stance set and tiger, dragon, monkey stepping
Kendang Djurus-Djurus 1-3 (Turning Djurus 1 & 2, 3)
Some additional pukulan djurus-djurus just because it is easy to apply. A total of 8 short ‘hand sets’
Some additional warm up exercises and basic kicking…[Read more]
