Welcome to KunTao Silat ~ the American Martial LifeStyle › Forums › Learning KunTao Silat › Seasoned Practitioners › Question of Sapu
I had a question on the Sapu (Front Sweep). I had previously seen the sapu down with a contact with the shin, and a lifting with the opponent's leg in contact with the shin (hooking with the ankle). Upon examination of the sapu it LOOKS LIKE (and I could be wrong), that the sapu in AKTS is more of a SCOOP using the inside of the calf, after shin contact is made.Is this correct? Thanks,John
Greetings John.Great Question.
I've even noticed it is done with the heel too.
That was Ted's specialty.
Reviving this thread since no one really gave an answer 😉 from my perspective I would say that are all valid option depending on the situations. Meaning that depending of your foot/leg angle, you can use different part of your leg to do it. With Randall, we often did it with a hooking from the inside of the foot. This can be use to grab the leg to intensify the throw.
I also seen some silat videos where the use the outside of the leg rather of the inside to sweep from the outside.
Sapu is an idea, not a technique.
There are essentially 3 different timings, 4 basic positions, and a virtually infinite number of depths at which it can be executed.
If you understand the timings, and displante and/or separation of bases and how it dictates the line of the sweep, you find a virtual endless variety in application. The key is not to worry as much about the WHAT as the WHY.
