Do you have a DVD series (or plan one) that focuses strictly on application? Sort of like a database of applications, organized by the concepts they represent and types of entries they use?

Hello!
I have a question. I was going through one of the vids, and Uncle Bill commented that he has some interchange with Ark Wong? How much of his art is interwoven into our’s? -

I have a question. Why split the curriculum in to two branches (KTS and Malabar)? Why not just run it all together in a sequential order?

KTS found me. I am definitely not following the prescribed program, but somehow it's gotten into my blood anyway. Maybe it's because I made a Ponchar and I “Play”on it all the time.

I have a freind of mine who is very accomplished in this art and teaches in his basement (you all know of him I am sure). I just sort of started playing with it and gradually, over time it became more and more of my central practice. Take djuru satu. I really didn't care about it. In fact i actively ignored it because I wasn't all that interested in the KTS. I was just doing it because I was there, and everyone else was doing it. I never even practiced the form. Then one day i was asked to show it and I just knew it. Not only did I know it, but I wasn't half bad with it either. I don't even know how that happened. I think in my case it's more accurate to say KTS found me.I don't want to let go of my Shaolin system however, so I focus most on the stuff that directly over laps (Like the way both arts systematically disassemble the opponents structure). My study is mostly on gross concepts, ideas and positioning tactics. I like the way the art engages better though. The Shaolin stands in such a way that you are a half step ahead of your opponent at all times. The KTS has you a full step ahead.

I haven't really paid much attention to all that stuff. I just know Guru Steve is on hiatus. I don't know all the details, and honestly, I don't care. We are all the same family regardless of what is going on behind the scenes. Everyone in my branch speaks very highly of everyone else who plays this art. Guru Joe in particular has allways shared fond memories of his training.

Morning,I just wanted to drop a line and say how lucky those are who are located in the Atlanta area. I have the first series of the DLP as well as the Foundation DVDs and while they are an excellent source of material, I find that having access to a Guru in the system is invaluable. Despite my background and experience in Wing Chun, which lends itself well to AKTS, I still find myself making simple mistakes regarding the training and movements. While I am sure that I would be able to resolve these errors over time with much practice, I feel my progress is accelerated by having a Guru to train with who can offer insight and correct my mistakes before they are compounded. There are so many things which one also needs to experience which are hard, if not impossible, to explain in words. While one can see the end result in the videos, there is nothing like seeing things like power generation demonstrated in person. It is encouraging to know that the end result can be obtained by following the direction found on the DLP tapes. I am fortunate to be only 1 1/2 hours away from Guru Derric who not only has the knowledge and skill but a great personality as well. In addition to the AKTS, Guru Derric opens his home to my children, whom I bring with me when I train. Being a single parent, not having to find a babysitter for Saturday mornings is also appreciated. In my opinion, Guru Derric personafies not only the skill but the morals and ethics of AKTS!! I would encourage anyone who is in the area, or just visiting, to take advantage of the chance to train with Derric. I believe you will not be disappointed. Peace,Dave
Hello!I hope you don't mind, but where are you located?

That sounds exactly like what I need! When is your next gathering? Is this a local one for your branch? or the big one with uncle Bill?

Hmm, in this case I would probably be better off giving him the partner practice one first, then do the basic dvd. He needs something usage oriented to play with, or he won't understand the reason for the drills. If he sees the drills first, with no context, he won't appreciate it and not see the value of the system.I wonder if Guru Steve might be willing to add a new video to his line that starts with a series of applications (like a dozen or so) that can be used against the common attacker,

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
I have not seen much of the Bill Chang stuff (That I know of anyway, I don’t always know the source), but by description is sounds a lot like other things I have experienced.
I am a big fan of the Northern Chinese internal arts. It’s very natural, if that makes any sense.
Learning to feel all the lines, angles and positions gives you a much more intuitive mastery of them.
But, like I said in another post, it’s not one vs. the other. It’s the two combined that holds the magic.
-

Well, from what little I have seen, it appears to me that it goes much, much deeper into the study of positioning, and the angles of entry than the Chinese arts do. On the other hand, the Chinese arts go significantly deeper into the body methods, powergenration, and rooting skills. So, I don’t think eliminating it is a good idea. The two together are more than the sum of their combination.
Now, part of where I am coming from, is that I could care less about rank. Frankly, I don’t really care much about the curriculum either. For me it has always been about answering the questions I had at the moment; which made me a very frustrating student for Joe to teach, as I often ignored his lesson completely and focused in on some minute detail or intricacy for my own reasons.
So from where I sit, I would leave it in the system. Teach it, were it seems best to teach it. There are answers to questions there, that a student may not even know he has, till he sees it.

It has been in there all this time, right?
Are you talking about taking it out of the system completely? or just as a Guru Muda requirement?

From my experience, these videos work best as an additional resource to regular coaching from a live teacher. For me, when I am watching something on the DVD, I am also reliving the experience I had in class as well. There have been several times when I got something from the video, but didn’t “Get” it in class, despite Joe practically hammering it into me.
That said, without Joe hammering it into me before hand, I never would have see it if all I had was the video alone.
I see live coaching, and video study as mutually supporting, rather than mutually exclusive.

For me, it’s a lack of time, really. I can only take small bites at a time, and most of that is solo work where I am trying to get back into the swing after life beat me up but good over the last few years.
Additionally, I connect through my phone, and I only have so much high speed data. Then it slows down to a crawl. I’d rather have DVDs.
I am also fortunate that I have Joe’s seniors around my area. I am trying to work my life so I have more time to work with them (Jeff Fargo in particular as he is closest to me)
