Gibran said, “the mountain, to the climber, is clearer from the plain.” As I ruminate upon the event, my heart is overwhelmed with the love I witnessed among those who made the arduous journey to the New Mexico wilderness to partake in the Gathering.
Oft I say that the best defense is a big smile ~ and Bill Chang often told me that it impressed…[Read more]

Hey Steve,
I’ve got a practice group going up in the north suburbs of Chicago. Monday nights as work/health permit. Usually 7-9. Occasional Thursdays as well. Really, we just meet up and train when we have time. It’s out of my home so I won’t put up the address. I believe my kuntaosilat email still works. Contact me at kyle@kuntaosilat.guru. Look…[Read more]

Absolutely Don! That’s how I started when I was driving for a living in the 1970s. Got it from the Charles Atlas Dynamic Tension program from back in the dark ages. The concept evolved for me as I continued to drive and ride bikes for long distances and perceived a need for constant exercise and breathing.
But here’s one of the most useful…[Read more]

You have made a lot of progress in that year! When you consider Malabar at Sixty, you must be insane. . . but you’ve stuck with it and prevailed. Switch to AKTS since you are in EldaCaka Land and you’ll gather more training partners. :-)>

When I have a guy getting aggressive on me that close, my first instinct is to put my hands up on him like I’m feeling the range with my fingers. It’s often called a “fence”. My next instinct is to establish a distance so I…[Read more]

Get a thick section of PVC pipe, maybe two inches thick. Grip it as tight as you can with both hands and start flexing your wrists in opposite directions, while gripping so hard that you can hear little “clicks”. Do this for timed rounds on the clock. I learned this in Shuai Jiao training.
It’s popular to drill a hole in a PVC pipe and put a cord…[Read more] -

It’s really cool that you noticed this. YES, arm swinging is a beginning component of training refined strikes similar to the ‘street’ sucker punch. Arm swinging is a common exercise in Chinese martial arts, but we take it to some peculiar places. You can see that people instinctively understand the lines it teaches – and those lines can have…[Read more]

Yes! There is a choice of Ling Sing Toy or Taung Lung to advance to Level Seven, which is the material I mentioned above. In your case, however, since you joined before this level of “External/Internal” “Taoist/Shaolin” was added ~ it is optional for you. When you complete this next level you will be Guru Muda. That was the deal we made when you…[Read more]

The “new” Level Seven in Malabar is the External Shaolin consisting of the I Shing Po, the Tai Keah and the Po Qua Zen forms which were originally reserved for gurus. I think this addition completes the Malabar System as Willem de Thouars gave to me as my own system. It has always been my goal to teach Willem’s art as he wanted it taught ~ so here…[Read more]
